With the kids only studying online for the rest of the year and me working more from home, we've pretty much exhausted all the family-friendly DVDs in my collection. For some movies that I think will have replay value, I'll order the discs from Best Buy or Amazon, but for other movies that I'll probably just rent rather than buy, will the above options provide which ones are better. audio/video quality for streaming movies? Who made the comparison? Does it depend on the device you are using?

Are you asking about service providers? You are right to ask about streaming devices. Both can make a difference.
If you're renting movies and want the highest bitrate for audio and video, then an AppleTV displaying content from the iTunes store is hard to beat. It's also probably the most expensive solution (in terms of hardware). In my opinion, Apple TV offers the best quality and library, although it is more expensive https://tv.apple.com/
You can narrow down your search by telling us WHAT content you want (recent pay-per-view movies are one example; older content or all-you-can-eat models like Netflix and Amazon Prime are quite another).
